The Char Dham Yatra takes you to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is a journey of faith, but it is also a long mountain road trip, and good planning makes a big difference.
When to go
The temples usually open around April or May and close around October or November. Exact opening and closing dates are announced each year, so confirm them before you book. May, June, September and October are the most popular months. Heavy rain in July and August can cause landslides and road closures.
Registration
Pilgrims are required to register with the Uttarakhand government before starting the yatra. Registration is done online or at counters on the route. Check the official Uttarakhand Tourism website for the current process and keep a copy of your registration with you.
How many days to allow
From Haridwar, the full circuit usually takes 10 to 12 days by road. Kedarnath and Yamunotri involve a trek (or pony, palki or helicopter for Kedarnath) from the last road point, so plan rest days after them.
For elderly travellers
Build in extra rest days, carry warm clothes even in summer, and speak to a doctor before travelling to high altitude.
Choosing the vehicle
